OC Women's Basketball Thriving Under New Leadership

By Keyon Rainey

The Olivet College women's basketball team is looking for a fresh start this season. After an 8-17 season last year, change is officially here to improve the program. New Head Coach Brittany Zandstra is no longer the interim head coach, officially earning the job last spring. Alongside Zandstra, new assistant coach Cassidy Williams was brought in and the whole culture has been turned around.

There was a press conference to introduce the new coaches to Olivet’s basketball program last spring and there was just a sense of positivity in the room and Olivet basketball is headed in a good direction.

This year so far, the girls have done a basketball camp in the summer. The team also went to volunteer at the West Michigan Miracle League field in Rockford where their mission is providing children with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball. Things like this are great to put things in perspective for us as human beings and it also was an event for the team to be together and just be with each other. This is a good example on the character of Coach Zandstra.

This year the women’s basketball team started off their season off with two exhibition games against two tough teams. They played against Lourdes out of Ohio and Division I Eastern Michigan University. Both games Olivet came up short, but they played hard and showed some bright sides.

You can just tell that what Coach Zandstra is doing with these girls is already better than the culture over the last few seasons. Be on the lookout for your Olivet College Women’s Varsity Basketball team this season.
