OC Sports Roundup: March 29-April 4

Women’s Volleyball

The Olivet College Women’s Volleyball team finished its week 0-2, with a home loss to Albion and another loss at Trine.

The Comets were swept in three sets against Albion, as sophomore Ellie Louiselle led Olivet with seven kills on the afternoon. Freshman Makenna Slack recorded 20 set assists, and Drue Mullin finished with 13 digs.

Against Trine, the Comets started off winning the first set by a score of 25-21. However, they would go on to drop the next three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-17, and 25-14. Audrey Lama finished with 11 kills, and Mia Parker added 17 digs.

The Comets are now 0-4 on the season and will next play Kalamazoo College on April 7.


Football

The Olivet College Football team suffered its first loss of the spring, losing to Adrian College 28-27.

After leading 21-10 at the end of the first half, Olivet managed only six second half points to Adrian’s 18. Adrian scored on a one-yard touchdown run to take a seven-point lead with 3:02 left in the game. Olivet then scored on its next possession but failed to convert the extra point, leaving Adrian with a one-point lead with 1:02 left in the game. The Comets would be held scoreless on their final drive of the game as the clock ran out.

For the Comet offense, SirQuarius Ball caught five passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns, while Jake Trujillo rushed 17 times for 74 yards. Defensively, David Curl led Olivet with 13 total tackles and Ta'Mar Heart-Wilkins added 2.5 tackles for loss for minus seven yards.

The Comets are now 1-1 on the season. Olivet’s game against Alma on April 10 has been cancelled due to Covid protocols, and there is no current plan to reschedule.


Softball

The Comets Softball team finished 0-4 on the week, losing all games over two doubleheaders against Saint Mary’s and Hope.

At Saint Mary’s, Olivet lost its games by scores of 8-0 and 18-2. Over the course of the doubleheader, the Comets tallied six hits over 10 innings of play. Lily Eagleton had the only 2 RBIs on the day for the Comets.

Olivet came up just short of their first win of the season later in the week, losing the first half of a doubleheader against Hope by the score of 9-8. Olivet poured in 12 hits, a new season high, including sophomore Erin Brady’s first college home run in the first inning of action. The Comets went on to get shutout 11-0 in their second game of the day against Hope.

The Olivet College Softball team is now 0-10 on the season and will take on Adrian College on April 6 at home.


Men’s Golf

Olivet Men’s Golf finished with a team score of 322, placing sixth in the second MIAA Jamboree of the spring.

Nicholas Hoffman shot Olivet’s lowest round of the day with a 76, which also placed him in an 11th place tie in the overall player standings. Wes Darrow finished the jamboree shooting an 81, and Isiah Strand shot an 82 to round out Olivet’s top three placers for the event. Trine placed first with a team score of 295.

The third MIAA Jamboree will take place on April 5.


Women’s Golf

The Olivet’s Women’s Golf team finished seventh in its third MIAA Jamboree, with a final team score of 366.

Aynslee Myer carded a team best 87, while Rayna Honsowitz shot an 89, and Rachel Webb finished third on the team with a 94. Hope won the event with a team score of 300, while Olivet finished ahead of both Alma and Albion.

The next women’s jamboree will take place on April 5.


Men’s Soccer

Olivet Men’s Soccer went 0-2 over the week with losses to Trine and Calvin.

The Comets were shut out in both losses last week, placing eight shots against Trine and only three shots against Calvin. Junior goalie Andrew Aragon had eight saves against Trine and four saves against Calvin.

The Comets will look to bounce back this upcoming week with a game against Albion on April 8.


Women’s Soccer

The Olivet Women’s soccer team lost its lone game of the week to Alma college by a score of 4-3.

Chelsie Smith, Kate Mcelhone, and Lauren Maybee accounted for Olivet’s three goals on the day. Maybee's goal in the 66th minute pulled the Comets within one point, but Olivet was held scoreless from that point on. Junior goalie Mekenzie Lamb finished with five saves and spent the entire game in goal.

The Comets will face Kalamazoo College on April 6.


Men’s Track and Field

The Men’s Track and Field team finished in second place at the 2021 Comet Invitational.

Hayden Germain, Kyle McDowell, Tyler Peck, and Dustin Rutter finished first in the 4x800 meter relay, and also broke the school record with a time of 7:58.31. Denver Orlando took first place in the pole vault clearing 4.2 meters, and Jordon Butler won the long jump event landing 6.73 meters. Jacob Smith also placed first in the discus throw at 41.95 meters.

Olivet’s next event will be on April 9 in Albion.

Women’s Track and Field

Olivet Women’s Track and Field team placed fifth at the Comet Invitational.

Gabby Jolliff placed second in the pole vault by clearing 2.9 meters and Jersey Gaedert earned the team third place points for a 28.38 finish in the 200-meter dash. Abbey Johnston also placed third in the discus throw with a toss of 32.63 meters.

The Comets will travel to Albion on April 9 for their next meet.
